Being Authentically You!

Being Authentically You!

Frillneck Lizard

We have all most likely done it from time to time.  It could have been whilst dating, attending a job interview or business conference, or meeting your partner’s family for the first time.  It is tempting during these occasions to wear a mask or put on a persona that you think will win other people over and have them like you more.

However, there are at least four very good reasons why you should be yourself and resist the temptation to behave in a way that you think others will find more attractive.

  1. Most people are very good at detecting a lack of authenticity. Even if they can’t quite tell exactly what it is, they generally can tell the difference between fake and genuine.  On the other hand, those who are comfortable in their own skin have a powerful attraction that draws others in.  Too many people concentrate on trying to say the right thing or behave perfectly when they should be focusing on just being themselves.  Notice the difference when you try it!
  2. Making important decisions in your life and business is difficult enough without having to worry about what others think. No one else knows you or your circumstances better than yourself, nor have they had the same experiences in life as you.  Whilst it makes sense to get professional advice or even the opinion of a trusted mentor, you will be able to focus on the key elements and what your needs are much better if you are not concerned about how your decisions will be perceived by others.
  3. When you do you authentically, you open yourself up to so many opportunities because success takes much more than hard work. It means trying new things, taking calculated risks, learning how to fail and how to make a comeback.  If you are not concerned about what others think you are free to make mistakes and find the best way that works for you.  After all, success is really just made of lessons from past failures.
  4. No woman or man is an island and building strong relationships is a crucial part of success. However, it is important that you don’t become a clone of others but instead cultivate and celebrate the diversity of everyone as a unique contributor. Because we are social creatures many people are often keen to fit in by emulating others looks and behaviours. No wonder we often struggle to remember names and faces!  If you want to be remembered, stand out from the crowd by being yourself.

Of course, this doesn’t mean being loud or overbearing.  You should never have to force your way to be heard or understood.  But when you find that happy balance between speaking your mind and being gracious, you will be noticed for all the right reasons.  Most people admire those who can stick to their principles without being coercive.  In a world of imitators, a gracious maverick makes for a refreshing change!
